Class Description
Writer’s block isn't merely a disconnect between the writer and the art but often the writer and their emotions. No matter when a writer takes a character or plot approach, their emotions fuels the narrative and characters. Being disconnected from self for the artist often reflects in being disconnected from the art. Speculative fiction offers a way to explore the depth of these emotions safely. It allows transparency and anonymity to exist in the same space. It's the metaphors and world building that allows for this. An investigator searching for a vindictive djinn could represent integrating your shadow side. A story about a statue could represent the trauma of losing a twin early in life. A tale about a medical professional who collects tongues could represent feeling silenced in everyday interactions. There were reading excerpts from authors like P. Djeli Clark, Suyi Davies, Sheree L Greer. Participants will be asked to pinpoint the emotions evoked and then there will be writing prompts to explore their own emotions. This will be great for all writers struggling with writer's block.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
