Flash Essays: Inventive and Playful Forms

Class Description

Because of its short span and low time commitment from readers, the brief essay form can be ideal for experimenting and taking risks with your material. Approaches that might be harder to pull off in a longer format can land with power and precision when compressed into 750 or 1,000 words. From second-person and collage essays to “hermit crab” essays that borrow forms from other realms (think recipes, quizzes, WebMD entries), the flash essay is a rich testing ground.

In this 3-hour seminar, we’ll examine the mechanics of several published flash essays that get creative with form and style, discussing how the writers' unique approaches enhance the truths they're telling. We’ll also do generative exercises, so you can apply what we learn to your own material. You’ll leave with nuts-and-bolts advice for shaping flash essays that surprise, challenge and delight readers.
