Class Description
Have you ever wanted to write poetry or are currently writing poetry and feel you don't have general knowledge about the genre? In this class, students will receive information about the lineage of poetry. We will discuss the major schools of thought, what influenced poets of each decade, and how these schools of thought shaped contemporary poetry. We’ll read poetry by Peter Gizzi, Allison Benis White, Franny Choi, and many more. At the end of class, students will have the opportunity to free-write a poem inspired (or reinspired) by a wider knowledge of poetry.
This class is a seminar, not a workshop, and is open to beginners. Readings and discussions will be the primary focus of this class.
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
