Class Description

This is a two-part class that meets on June 14th and June 21st.

Let’s be frank: there are few things worse than a class on comedy. But if you’ve been thinking about trying your hand at some standup, here’s what makes this six-hour, two-day seminar different. In the first session, we’ll examine a lot of delicious bits of comedy and explore all the different possible approaches to standup to help you determine which fits best on you. Next, we’ll do some in-class exercises in setup and punch line construction as we put together our own five minute sets. And since today’s comedy climate is so politically charged, we’ll look at how comedy changes over time and talk about what makes a joke hack and what makes a joke acceptable (or unacceptable) today. You’ll come into the second session with a draft of your five-minute set that we’ll all help each other go over, and punch-up, as a class. Finally, the class will culminate in a standup performance at Grub Street where you’ll get to tryout your new material in front of a live audience. Oh, and stop calling me Frank.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
