The task of figuring out your characters' voices–figuring out what they say and when they say it–in your screenplay can be a daunting one. But what about focusing on what your characters don't say?
In this fun and interactive workshop, participants will learn approaches to dialogue and subtext in dramatic writing through prompts and writing activities. We will study examples of subtext and character voice from movie clips and script excerpts and we will cover some of the basic elements of dialogue writing in screenwriting. We will also write our own dialogue from several in-class activities and writing prompt exercises. Students will walk away with more tools to approach their dialogue writing and feel confident they can express on the page what their character does and doesn't say. Writers of all levels and expereince welcome!

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
