Class Description

Ready to write some new stories? You’ve come to the right place. In this spin on our classic 6 Weeks, 6 Stories course, we will have one goal: to write and develop three new short stories. Each week, we’ll explore a different short story form or theme to inspire our work, reading published examples from authors like Samanta Schweblin, Vi Khi Nao, Azareen Van der Vliet Oloomi, Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, Sabrina Orah Mark, Can Xue, Tommy Orange, and Lydia Davis, and studying the craft behind them. And we'll put what we learn into practice through a series of reflections, writing and revision prompts.

During the first half of class, we’ll write and submit three new short story drafts (with the option of submitting either a flash piece of no more than 1,000 words, or the beginning of a draft), working in small feedback groups to identify the “heat” of our stories. In the second half of class, we’ll develop and revise one or all three of our drafts, and then submit ONE of those stories to receive more a comprehensive workshop from the entire class. By the end of the course, we’ll come away with three new stories, as well as at least one revised draft, and the insight and inspiration to help us finish them.
