Class Description
This generative class is for writers who want to explore new genres and also learn techniques that can translate into your other work. We’ll steal word choice from poets, dialogue from screenwriters, and sequencing from experimental writers. Each class will consist of reading examples from each genre, responding to prompts, sharing and discussing work, and learning about paths to publication for each genre. You will receive feedback each week.
By the end of this course, you will have generated new ideas and drafts in each of these genres and have directions to pursue them further or submit work in the future. Our focus will be on expanding our exploration and learning techniques from multiple genres to apply to all of our work. We’ll take a look at: short fiction, the novel, poetry, nonfiction, screenwriting, and experimental forms. Our goal is not just to produce new and unexpected work, but to stretch our skills of dialogue, description, and character by engaging in different genres. Come prepared to step out of your comfort zone and generate a diverse body of work!
