Class Description
Class Description:
Come spin a tale with us! Whether you’re working towards a novel or writing short stories, poetry, plays or genre-fluid experiments, this is an opportunity to improve your skills and learn about new forms. We’ll explore different forms, and each day will be filled with writing and reading exercises designed to get you thinking and creating. How do you engage all of the senses in your writing, so that your readers smell and taste your scenes? Can you sit down and have a conversation with your characters? How can you twist and tease language so that all of its sounds become your tools? This week, we’ll explore all that and more, while using our favorite stories as reference points.
That’s right, we’re talking retellings: the OG fanfics that reframe classic stories through the lenses of new time periods, new locations, new identities, or even new magical abilities. You might have heard tell of a cyborg Cinderella, a post-apocalyptic Red Riding hood, a queer Peter Pan. But retellings aren’t just for fairytales. How about a gender-swapped Sherlock Holmes? A contemporary Gatsby? A diversely cast rap-musical tale of American History? (Yes, I’m talking Hamilton.) From Shakespeare to Stranger Things, you name it, there’s probably a retelling… or maybe you’ll be the one to write it! Retelling our favorite stories lets us extend the fun, of course, but it also helps us find our individual voices while challenge the original narratives and develop our writing skills without facing the overwhelming blank page. The only limit is your imagination! For writers age 13 - 18 ONLY.
