Class Description

We’ve all heard stories of our parents’ and grandparents’ lives—tales of survival, of perseverance, of flourishing amid unimaginable circumstances. We’ve also heard quieter tales of the simple, beautiful art of being human in another time. But what can we do with these stories aside from tell them over and over to others? How do we create deeper meaning from the lives of those in the generations behind us? For this eight-week workshop, you will bring with you a cherished piece of family lore and learn how to bolster it with structure, weave in your own insights and wisdom, and begin to transform it into a polished piece of nonfiction that you can offer to others in a new way. The workshop will also be generative enough that you can expect to come away with the beginnings of several pieces of nonfiction.

Please note: Class does not meet February 22nd.

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
