Dept. of Congrats: October 2022 Community Successes
Every month, we celebrate successes of all stripes! In October, Grubbies were published in literary journals across the country, won awards and prizes, published books, and so much more. Our community is closing October 2022 out with 31 publications, seven awards and prizes, three book publications, and two book deals! Suellen Wedmore's book A Fixed White Light, which features poems spoken in the voices of six courageous women lighthouse keepers of the late 1800's, was published by Down East Books. Essay Incubator Graduate Brandy E. Wyant's essay "How Should Therapists Respond When Clients Say 'I Love You'?" was published in Pollen Magazine. She thanks her colleagues in the 2021-22 Essay Incubator, especially instructor Ethan Gilsdorf, for their generous feedback on the draft and all their support. Susan Phillips' short story "Wedding Portrait" was published in The Penmen Review. Memoir Incubator Graduate Tamara MC’s interview “‘Just Show Up’: Adiba Nelson Talks About Ain’t That a Mother with Tamara MC” was published in Mutha Magazine. She thanks her GrubStreet Memoir Incubator pals, Julie Brill, Rob Laubacher, and Patty Mulcahy.
Sarah Seltzer's debut novel, The Singer Sisters, will be published by Flatiron Books. She worked on it in the "Novel Revision Intensive" and "Get Ready for Submission" Online: On-Demand classes. Julie Brill’s essay “In Belgrade, Traces Remain of the Holocaust’s Disappeared,” originally published in Balkan Insight, was featured in Sari Botton's Memoir Monday substack. She's in great company, including fellow Memoir Incubator colleague Tamara MC. Betty Reed’s personal essay “A Map of Marriage on Monhegan Island” was published in Persimmon Tree. She thanks Xujun Eberlein and colleagues from the Advanced Personal Essay Workshop for their input.
Instructor Lesléa Newman's memoir-in-verse I Wish My Father has received a Massachusetts Poetry Book Honor. Essay Incubator Graduate Joy von Steiger’s essay “WRITING LIFE: Support Yourself as You Write About Trauma” was published in Hippocampus. She thanks Kristen Paulson for publishing her essay about managing traumatic material when writing, and Michelle Bowdler for her help with this piece. Short Story Incubator Graduate Ann Russell's short story "Art Thieves" was published in Pangyrus. She thanks GrubStreet instructors Tina Tocco, Ron MacLean, Stacy Mattingly, and K.L. Pereira for their guidance.
BWOC Member and Memoir Incubator Pauline Scheer Fellow Lorena Hernández Leonard's piece "Learning to Throw Axes" was published in Tasteful Rude. Her essay "Children of the Sun" received an Honorary Mention in Writer's Digest Annual Writing Competition. She thanks her Memoir Generator colleague Maria Vertkin for trying axe throwing with her. Instructor Courtney Sender’s debut book, In Other Lifetimes All I've Lost Comes Back to Me: Stories, is officially available for preorder. It will be released by West Virginia University Press on March 1, 2023. Christine Bagley has become the new co/editor and co-publisher of Best New England Crime Stories, whose 2022 edition Deadly Nightshade has just been released. She thanks the GrubStreet community for their support. Instructor Mary Carroll Moore's speculative flash fiction story "Hearing Voices" was published in The Airgonaut.
Memoir Incubator Graduate Tamara MC’s piece “This is 50: Dr. Tamara MC Responds to The Oldster Magazine Questionnaire” was published in Oldster Magazine. Silvia Spring’s short story “Rosebell” was published on The Masters Review’s New Voices blog. Amy Johnson's short story "Estelle and the Cabbage's First Last Night Together" was published in Diabolical Plots. Instructor Robin McLean's third book and second collection of stories, Get ’em Young, Treat ’em Tough, Tell ’em Nothing, was released on October 18th by And Other Stories. It was reviewed in the New York Times by Aimee Bender. The paperback of her debut novel, Pity the Beast, was released the same day. She thanks GrubStreet for all the help along the way. Pete Prokesch's short story "My Brother's First" was named on Superlative Journal's 2022 Feature-Piece Shortlist.
Essay Incubator Graduate Jennifer Dines’ essay “The Quit-Lit Pseudoscience and Faulty Feminism of Women’s Sobriety Memoirs” was published in Current Affairs. She thanks Essay Incubator instructor Ethan Gilsdorf for his support in helping her to plan out the tone of this piece. Memoir Generator and Advanced Essay Workshop Graduate Iris (Yi Youn) Kim's food essay "My Mom’s Son-Mat Reminds Me That Home Is Where The Heart Is" was published in Delish Magazine as part of the collection "Field Notes from Asian American Kitchens." Jung Hae Chae's memoir-in-essays Pojangmacha People won the 2022 Graywolf Press Literary Nonfiction Prize. She thanks the Boston Writers of Color Group for all the support over the years, as well as for the scholarship to attend Muse & the Marketplace conference last year.
Instructor Lesléa Newman has received the Massachusetts Book Award Honor for her memoir-in-verse, I Wish My Father. Instructor Catherine Parnell's flash fiction piece "Dice" was published in Bending Genres. Diane Lederman’s short story "Pennyroyal, Savin and Tansy" was published in Kestrel. It is the fourth story from her book Color of Stars, which is seeking an agent. Cat Green’s short essay "BigTXSkies" was published in the debut volume of Pink Pansy Press. This is Cat's first publication.
Jeffrey Feingold’s lyric creative nonfiction essay “Grace,” originally published in Hare’s Paw Literary Journal, will be reprinted by Unlimited Literature. Pete Prokesch's short story "The Wedding Ring" was published in Night Clubs (Poet's Choice/Free Spirit). Manuscript Consultant Jessamyn Hope’s short story “Verified Purchase”—told entirely through Amazon reviews—was published in The Fiddlehead. GrubStreet Board member Kathy Sherbrooke's historical novel, Leaving Coy's Hill, won a MA Book Award Honors in Fiction prize. She'd like to thank all the Grub writers who offered craft advice, marketplace wisdom, blurbs(!), and endless encouragement for the novel!
Instructor and Essay & Memoir Incubator Graduate Kristen Paulson-Nguyen presented "Title Doctor: Discovering a Title That Entices Agents" at the Gotham Writers Conference on October 15th. She's grateful for the continued support of her Memoir Incubator year. Essay Incubator Graduate Jennifer Dines's essay "Hitting Bottom Through The Body" was published on the Bottomless to Sober blog.
