Craft Talk Series: 'Nearby and Dignified: On Rendering Characters from Marginalized Communities' with A.J. Rodriguez

Event Description

What does it mean to have a “fully-fleshed out” character? How does that meaning shift if a character comes from a marginalized background? This session addresses these questions by considering the cultural context, history, and power dynamics that shape our understanding of storytelling. Calling upon the work of authors such as Matthew Salesses and Paisley Rekdal, we will address what makes a portrayal dehumanizing or appropriative while also investigating how to subvert stereotypes and render characters from marginalized communities with dignity and complexity. Attendees will have the opportunity to respond to prompts, contribute to the conversation, and will walk away with an expanded perspective on how to illuminate the full humanity of the lives we story into the world.

This program will take place in-person at our Center for Creative Writing in Boston's Seaport neighborhood.
