Class Description
CLASS FULL
This class is free and you do not need to pay or apply for a scholarship.
Optimism and hope can be challenging when our worlds have been turned upside down. But it’s precisely when nothing’s going right that those ways of seeing matter most! Stories about the future are all around us, but too often they imagine the same tired dystopias. Plus, the teenagers populating those sad worlds are the ones who get to have all the “fun.” In this session, however, we’ll envision a future with all of us as dynamic actors in it —citizens, worldbuilders, heroes and antagonists alike. We’ll read excerpts from works of visionary authors. We’ll write to prompts and craft narratives that imagine a better way forward for humanity, one in which we live in harmony with the earth that is our inheritance.
Who Should Register?
Write Down the Street has a special focus on making the creative writing workshop more accessible to those who have been underrepresented in it due to cost, racism, immigration status, language access, lack of access to transportation, and other barriers. We believe that these voices must be spotlighted with the range and fullness they deserve.
These programs are offered tuition-free thanks to the support of generous donors who are committed to our mission of ensuring all voices are heard.
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
