Class Description
Learning to objectively evaluate and edit your own work is as an important a skill for a writer as the writing itself. And like any skill, it requires technique and practice. In this three-hour class, students will learn the fundamentals of stellar editing from a professional editor with twenty years of “Big Five” experience publishing numerous New York Times bestsellers and her own novels.
Students will learn the fundamentals of developmental editing at the macro and line levels. This class is designed to focus on hands-on practice and examples evaluating and editing a piece of writing and sharing your own work. Participants will take turns giving each other editorial feedback on short sections, as well as learn tips and techniques for how to approach editing their own work, including how (and when) editing fits into the writing process, how to break down and approach revisions and feedback, and how to decide when you’ve taken your own editing as far as you can.
Students will leave with a better understanding of the art and nuance of professional editing and concrete skills to apply to their own work—and others too.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
