Class Description
If you’ve ever wanted to write without editing, censoring, or judging, this is your chance. Freewriting is a highly effective technique to get words on a page for the first time or to work out thorny problems in an ongoing project. No worries about publication or perfection. Freewriting not only fuels creative energy but it’s also a powerful way to inform craft, whether you write (or want to write) fiction or nonfiction. In a fun, critique-free atmosphere, we’ll discuss the principles of freewriting, drawing from the work of Natalie Goldberg, Steve Almond, Brenda Ueland, and Peter Elbow, as well as the instructor's Write It Like It Is workshops. Throughout the day, we’ll do freewrites in response to a variety of prompts. Sharing is optional but encouraged. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, you'll learn practical tools for continuing the process at home. Bring pens, a notebook, and the willingness to take a risk.
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
