Class Description
Whether writing a book review, building a collection of essays, crafting opinion pieces, or reporting on an event, students in this three-hour seminar will learn tips and strategies on how to make money as a freelance writer. Through in-class exercises—including pitching editors and identifying helpful resources and listservs—participants will understand how to use excerpts from their in-progress books and other writings, and how to leverage their expertise, to land paid writing gigs. We’ll also discuss how fiction and nonfiction writers alike can use journalism to raise awareness around current writings and cultivate an even broader audience. There will be opportunities for students to share challenges and goals for their writing and gain feedback and advice. Expect to leave the class with ideas on how to use excerpts, conduct research, and apply personal experiences and expertise to make money as a freelance writer.
While most of the class will cover how to pitch nonfiction writing, writers of all genres will be able to learn how to take advantage of these skills to grow their publications (and paychecks).

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
