Class Description
Have you always wanted to try your hand at writing fiction but don’t know where to begin? Or do you have some experience but have fallen out of the habit or need a little more inspiration? In this class, you’ll devote a day to the art of fiction. You’ll read and discuss short selections by authors such as Zadie Smith, George Saunders, and Jhumpa Lahiri, receive instruction on fundamentals such as story architecture, characterization, and plot, hone your craft with writing exercises, and have a chance to share what you write in class for on-the-spot feedback aimed at identifying what’s most compelling in the work and how to develop it further. You’ll also receive advice on how to keep yourself writing and guidance on next steps. Come to class ready to write, and expect to leave with new material and a clearer idea where to go from here.
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
