Class Description
Committing to a project is often the hardest part, but some of the most exciting writing emerges from early experimentation. In this class, we'll try our hands at various prompts designed to jumpstart our memoirs. We will read and discuss interviews from writers who talk about how they began their memoirs. We will study famous first pages to see how early sentences shape an entire work. You do not need to bring draft pages to this class, but you should have an idea about what story you want to tell and why. Bring an open mind, and be ready to experiment with voice, structure, and theme with a group of ambitious writers.
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
