Just Make It Up: Idea Generator

Class Description

If you've been told to "write from experience," but you get stuck thinking that nothing’s ever happened to you that you’d want to read about; or, if you have a killer idea for a thrilling plot, but you can’t figure out who the characters should be, this class is for you.

In this workshop, original ideas are not sudden jolts of inspiration, they’re more like Frankensteins: inspiration carefully collected from many different places that you stitch together with trial and error. This is a practical, hands-on course in which we’ll run through a gauntlet of exercises to generate new ideas, part by part. Participants should come ready to just make it up! This is open to writers of all experience levels and in all genres.

Class Format

This class will take place in-person at our Center for Creative Writing in Boston's Seaport neighborhood.

Covid-19 Update:

Scholarship Information

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
