Class Description
As writers, we frequently seek inspiration in the writing of others. In this generative class for nonfiction writers of all levels, we'll discuss what we might call "re-reading essays," in which writers engage directly with books (or other art) that have shaped them, writing personal/critical essays that use their encounters with literature as jumping-off points to say something new. Example readings may include work by writers including Briallen Hopper, Leslie Jamison, Zadie Smith, and Esmé Weijun Wang. Devote your morning to reading as a writer—and writing as a reader. Students will learn about this increasingly popular essay form and the sources of inspiration it offers, and will also spend in-class time starting their own "re-reading essays" or working on writing of their choice.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
