Class Description
This advanced course is for students who’ve previously taken Novel in Progress (or equivalent coursework) and want to build on that momentum with a community of writers similarly in progress. It is also designed for writers who have made significant headway on their novel or have completed a full first draft, and are interested in the great adventure that is novel revision. Up to half of each class will be spent discussing novel-specific craft elements, with a focus on third acts, endings, and revision techniques; Kate Atkinson’s Case Histories, which we’ll be reading as we write; and in-class writing exercises. The remaining time will be devoted to sharing your works in progress. This is not a formal workshop. At least twice during the term you will have the opportunity to read your work aloud to the group for big-picture feedback or brainstorming sessions. By the end of the course, you’ll have a surer understanding of your novel as a whole, and how you can use revision—the most playful, go-for-broke, and experimental part of the writing process—to tweak and prune and re-work your novel, and bring it as close as you can to the book you first imagined writing.
