Class Description
The aging process and dealing with the rocky terrain of middle age can be both challenging, and (in terms of our writing, at least) enriching. As creative nonfiction writers, we can explore middle age as a rich ground for short personal essays, flash memoir, and longer pieces focusing on the human condition and times when the 'rug was pulled out' from under us.
In this one-day workshop, based on "My Life in the Middle Ages," by the writer James Atlas, we will examine short vignettes about mid-life, and complete a series of exercises, mining various aspects of middle age--caring for aging parents, navigating illness, and accumulating hard-won wisdom along the way.
By day's end, you'll have a series of short pieces in progress, along with ideas for developing and strengthening your nonfiction pieces.
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.

This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!
