Class Description
In this intensive one-day class for new writers or those looking for a refresher, we'll survey ideas about poetry and poetic form, including genre, occasion, figure, address, tone, image, and object. You’ll receive quick lessons on the basic elements of poetry, read and discuss selections from poems by authors such as Anne Carson and Joshua Clover, do a series of fun, directed writing exercises aimed at experimenting with and deepening your understanding of the elements, and have a chance to share what you’ve written in class for brief, on-the-spot feedback. Come ready to read, write, and engage in a lively discussion about craft. You’ll leave with an understanding of the basic elements of poetry, some original material to work with, and a clearer idea of where to go next.
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
