Rooted: Starting Your Story with Setting

Class Description

Setting grounds our readers strongly so that they are rooted enough in time, place, mood, and context to feel along with the narrator and/or main characters. But what does that mean? In this class, we will learn why it's important to write with setting and world-building in mind, using active details to immerse readers in seeing what our characters see, knowing what our characters know.

In this class, which benefits writers of fiction and nonfiction alike, we'll read work by Donika Kelly, Lisa Wool-Rim Sjöblom, Cathy Park Hong and others, and engage in multiple writing prompts. Students will leave with tools to write about setting more confidently than ever before.

Class Format

This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!

Scholarship Information

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
