Class Description
Please note: This session is open to GrubStreet instructors only. This session will also be recorded.
This professional development workshop series, led by Marika Preziuso PhD, will focus on the core aspects and practices of Intercultural Understanding, a pedagogy that Preziuso designed in 2018 to be adapted to writing genres and teaching modalities. Intercultural Understanding (IU) is an orientation to teaching that is centered on the value of difference. The purpose of IU is to create a culture that honors the complexities, specificity, and dignity of every participant in the workshop; a culture that capitalizes on the differences in identities, craft traditions, personal and learning needs, and expectations that live in every workshop, in the interest of deep transformative learning for all writers.
- In this second session, we will check in on our motivation to expand the range of voices and narratives we offer in our workshop, and how to do it with diligence and nuance. For example, how do we compare texts and traditions from various cultures and geographies? What metrics of “inclusion” of texts and voices do we employ in our work? How do we respond to and engage with texts and writers who resist our inclusion practices?
- We will dedicate time to the specific knowledge, experiences, and perspectives of BIPOC faculty, and faculty with intersecting identities that have been historically underrepresented in the writing workshop;
- We will address how to engage with the most common feedback we receive especially from BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ students about our workshops, and how to enact change in our workshop in light of their feedback, ultimately in the interest of all participating writers.
