Slam Poetry for Beginners

Class Description

Slam poetry! It's not just for kids anymore. Whether you write fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, if you read your work to an audience, you are performing, and you need to do three things: entertain, engage, and affect. In this 3-hour slam poetry workshop, you will gain a better understanding of how to accomplish these objectives. You will learn the basics of literary performance and audience dynamics, and you will draft an original slam-style poem. After a bit of revision, you will experiment with character and tone of poem in preparation for a friendly in-class slam-style competition. This class is open to any and all who are interested, regardless of genre or experience.

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
