Social Media for Writers

Class Description

WHY do writers have to be literate in social media? Isn't it enough that we write the books? Didn't we choose this profession in part because we don't like to be in the spotlight? What are the benefits of Facebook, Twitter, and Instragram in reaching an audience? What do you share on your social media channels: facts about writing, your books … YOU? How do you even choose from among the offerings at the huge social media buffet—or do you need to be active on all the sites?

Social media bedevils many writers who would prefer to be anonymous but are being told by publishers that anonymity isn't a very good option anymore, in an age of increasing artist accessibility and self-promotion. Please join New York Times bestselling author Jenna Blum, whose activities on social media have been credited with greatly increasing her readership, as she walks you through the choices available to you in today's seemingly infinite networking possibilities.

Class will include lecture, discussion, and Q&A, and participants will leave with a written description of what social media avenues they're willing to and enthusiastic about using and why. Participants should have published work and be concerned about how to reach audiences via social media. Bring a laptop with wi-fi capability (we will be looking at sample social media pages).

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
