Class Description
With transgender and nonbinary visibility on the rise, transgender and nonbinary stories are appearing in fiction at a significant rate, necessitating workshops to grow awareness of how to best critique such stories and ensure transgender and nonbinary students feel included in the classroom at large. By providing a helpful environment for transgender and nonbinary writers and their stories, instructors can play an important role in bolstering transgender and nonbinary visibility in the written arts.
In this 90-minute session, we'll look at how to prep your syllabus and classroom for transgender and nonbinary inclusion; investigate classroom situations most commonly experienced by transgender and nonbinary students within a cis*-majority space; and have opportunity to ask curiosity questions you may have about the transgender and nonbinary communities. Don't be shy! This session is designed to encourage cisgender* instructors to do their best and help them better connect with themselves and the gender-diverse worlds around them.
* "Cisgender” (or “cis” for short) is defined as a person who identifies with the gender and/or sex they were assigned at birth.

This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.

We ask that instructors enable closed captioning and send a transcript of the session after class. You can also enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting. If your instructor forgets to send the transcript, just send ’em an email!
