Class Description

Are you intrigued by the world of speculative poetry and want to dive deeper into its creative depths? Join us for a captivating class that unravels the mysteries of speculative poetry, a genre in high demand among publishers for science fiction and fantasy magazines. Speculative poetry encompasses imaginative and futuristic verse that explores scenarios, settings, or concepts not necessarily based on the present but rooted in the realm of possibility. It often includes elements of science, fantasy, and the speculative, allowing poets to pose "what if" questions about the world, society, technology, or the human condition.

In this course, we'll embark on a journey through the fascinating realm of speculative poetry. We'll draw inspiration from acclaimed publications like FIYAH, Anathema, and Solarpunk, Strange Horizons and gaining insights into the art of crafting imaginative verses. We'll also explore anthologies featuring contemporary poets who have made their mark in this genre.

Through readings and discussions, we'll decode the elements that make speculative poetry unique. You'll learn how to infuse your writing with vivid imagery, thought-provoking concepts, and boundless creativity, all essential components of speculative poetry.

But this class isn't just about appreciating the work of others. We'll roll up our sleeves and engage in generative exercises that encourage you to craft your own speculative poems. You'll have the chance to experiment with themes, styles, and worlds limited only by your imagination.

No prior experience with speculative poetry is necessary—just an eagerness to explore and a passion for storytelling through verse. Whether you're a seasoned poet or a newcomer to the genre, this class will expand your horizons and equip you with the tools to embark on your own speculative poetry adventures. Join us as we unlock the magic of speculative poetry together!
