Writing the Novella

Class Description

In this seminar, students will learn the essentials of writing, revising and completing a novella manuscript, while also examining and discussing the craft of the novella form. In discussing craft essentials, we will also read excerpts from novellas by authors such as Jacqueline Woodson, Haruki Murakami and Banana Yoshimoto. The workshop component of the course will offer a workshop experience for students who will have the opportunity to share up to four pages (double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font) of new or revised novella manuscript pages with the class for on-the-spot feedback.

Note: this class also accommodates students who might decide to expand their novella into a traditional-length novel with a practical discussion on the connections between novella and novel writing.

Class Format

This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!

Scholarship Information

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button.
