Class Description
Class Description:
Celebrate the end of the semester with YAWP’s Teen Wellness Retreat! Students will learn how to navigate this fast-paced world with guidance from Tricia Hersey’s book Rest is Resistance and short anecdotes from various readings that focus on how to listen to your body and mind when rest is needed. We live in a world where capitalism and consumerism are the central part of how society determines a person’s value through our work and production. Throughout this workshop we will dive into questions such as: How can we collectively care for each other with the power of naps and deep rest? How can rest as a form of resistance against capitalism allow for the reimagining of our world? What are some practices that you can do to revive the spirit, mind, and most importantly, body in order to prevent burnout? We are worthy of rest! To end the workshop, students will have a variety of teas to choose from and watch the Studio Ghibli film,“Howl’s Moving Castle.” Everyone will also receive a wellness gift bag, including a copy of Rest is Resistance.
The retreat will take place after our in-person YAWP Saturday sessions, so feel free to make a whole day of it at our Boston Center for Creative Writing! For writers age 13 - 18 ONLY.
Takeaways:
Students will leave with steps and practices on how to avoid burnout and what to do if you get to the point where your mind and body require rest. They will also learn that rest should not be considered a luxury, but a human necessity that liberates us.
