Class Description

Looking for the inspiration and accountability to produce new work? You’ve come to the right place. In this spin on our classic 6 Weeks, 6 Stories course, you will have one goal: to write and and develop three new short stories.

Each week, we’ll explore a different short story form or theme to inspire our work, reading published examples from authors like Akhil Sharma, Lauren Groff, Yiyun Li, James Baldwin, and Justin Torres, and studying the craft behind them. We’ll put what we learn into practice through a series of exercises and writing prompts. During the first half of class, you will write and submit three new short story drafts (you will have the option of submitting either a flash piece of no more than 1,500 words, or the beginning of a draft), for impressions and feedback from your fellow writers, to help you identify and develop the “heat” of your stories. In the second half of class, you will have the option of developing and revising either one of those drafts, or all three. You will also have the opportunity to submit one of those revisions for a comprehensive workshop from your instructor and fellow writers.
By the end of the course, you’ll come away with three new stories, as well as at least one revised draft, and the insight and inspiration to continue revising.

By the end of the course, you’ll have six new stories, or story beginnings, and the insight and inspiration to help you finish them.

*NOTE that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Weekly lessons and assignments open each Wednesday. Students will receive an invitation to Wet Ink, our online class platform, before 5pm on the first day of class.
