Finding Your Ending: Online

Class Description

Finding the right ending for your story might be the most difficult part of the writing process — we need to thread the needle with theme, magic, metaphor, and character, all without being too preachy or heavy-handed. In this class, we'll look behind the curtain of great story endings and adapt what we learn to our own endings. We'll work on fitting resonant images and powerful character choices into story endings — all while balancing the bitter and the sweet. Each week, we will read examples of great stories and discuss what makes them great (readings will include works by Alice Munro, ZZ Packer, Toni Morrison, Richard Ford, James Joyce, Sandra Cisneros, and others). At the end of each week, we will engage in practical weekly exercises to revise our own endings. You will also have the opportunity to submit your own ending for feedback.
You will come away from the class with a workshopped short story or novel ending, and concrete techniques and exercises for writing moving story endings in the future.

*NOTE that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Weekly lessons and assignments open each Wednesday. Students will receive an invitation to Wet Ink, our online class platform, before 5pm on the first day of class.
