Jumpstart Your Writing

Class Description

This course has a very clear mission: devote several hours a week to developing your writing practice. Through a series of fun, directed writing exercises, we will explore the world of prose: mining for material, constructing characters and settings, shaping dialogue, understanding point of view, and finding your voice. We will discuss the process of writing and the strengths and weaknesses of the work we produce in class. We may read and discuss some short, published texts in regard to craft, then write exercises inspired by the texts. The course will provide a supportive and generative experience for both new and practicing writers. Given the instructor’s area of experience, particular emphasis and attention will be paid to nonfiction writing, though fiction writers are welcome as well. Note that this is not a course in the fundamentals of prose writing, but an opportunity for beginners and advanced students to generate new narratives and scenes.

Note: Class does not meet Monday, October 14th or Monday, November 11th.

Scholarship Information

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
