Class Description
We all want to make our voice heard in today's turbulent times, but how do we do it in a nuanced, purposely way and get our commentaries published? In this one-week intensive, students will learn tips on writing op-eds; will work on one or two social justice commentaries (choosing between writing two short ones or one longer piece of 1,500 words); and analyze commentaries on the hottest issues of our times, including racism, immigration, school segregation, and religious intolerance. To inspire ideas and get a sense of great social justice writing in any form, a potential reading list will include articles, essays or poems by Nikole Hannah-Jones of the New York Times Magazine; Ta-Nehisi Coates; Natasha Trethewey; Alex Marzano-Lesnivich; and Richard Blanco.
