Dept. of Congrats: December 2022 Community Successes

Every month, we celebrate successes of all stripes! In December, Grubbies were published in literary journals across the country, won awards and prizes, published books, and so much more. Our community closed December 2022 out with 37 publications, four awards and prizes, two fellowships, and more! Let us celebrate you: submit your good news to GrubStreet’s Department of Congratulations.

Pete Prokesch's flash-fiction story "Stigmata" was published in The Wise Owl. He thanks instructor Jane Dykema and classmates from the flash fiction intensive for feedback on the piece. Diane Forman's essay "I Never Knew Irene Cara. But the "Fame" Star Knew Me" was published on NBCThink. Lorena Hernández Leonard joined Solstice Literary Magazine as Editor-in-Chief where she'll be focusing on amplifying the voices of more diverse writers, among her many goals for the magazine. She is grateful to author and fellow BWOC member Anjali Mitter Duva for her encouragement and support.

Amory Rowe's interview about writing and running with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Kathryn Schulz was published in Meter Magazine. Instructor Debbie Sosin's self-help workbook, Breaking Free of Addiction, first published in 2017, was acquired by New Harbinger Publications. An updated edition will be released in Spring 2024. Giulietta Nardone's tiny “empowerment horror” story “Scenes From A Shower” was published in Friday Flash Fiction. Her tiny memoir was published in The Sun Magazine’s “Readers Write.” Diane Barnes’ novel All We Could Still Have will be published by Lake Union in June 2023. She worked on the first draft in Annie Hartnett's Novel Generator and would like to thank Annie for her guidance. Diane would also like to thank all her Generator classmates, especially her critique partners, Joanne Barahona, Lee Hoffman, and Ben Cotton.

Kirsten Levy’s recently published memoir, Alzheimer's Fantasy in the Key of G, is being honored by Shelf Unbound as a 2022 Top 100 Indie Notable. Instructor Mary Carroll Moore's short story "Breathing Room" about a scuba vacation gone awry was published in Rappahannock Review. Judy Lannon’s novel Nine Days has received two awards from the American Writers Awards: Finalist in Best New (Debut) Novel and Finalist in Women's Fiction. Instructor David Farrow's queer pandemic story, "Little Death," was published in Haven Speculative. He thanks his Grubbie writing group for workshopping this story and for always being so supportive.

Memoir Incubator Graduate Meg Senuta's essay "Bad News 101" was nominated for a Pushcart Prize by Creative Nonfiction Magazine, and was featured in Memoir Monday and 3-2-1 Sunday. Her nonfiction short "The Base Note" also appeared in Brevity. She thanks her sister Memoir Incu-Bees (Molly Howes, Shelby Meyerhoff, Katie Bannon, Judy Bolton-Fasman, Carroll Sandel, and Ann Macdonald) for their wisdom, encouragement, and for reading many, many, many drafts. Diane Forman's essay "The Nazis Separated my Family. This Ring Connects Us" was published in Kveller. Instructor Ron MacLean's story "Speckled Chicken Hotel" was published in Barrelhouse.

Instructor Marilyn R. Atlas had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful writer, Julie Kingsley, at the Muse. She subsequently optioned her book and has now set it up as a movie. Karla Hirsch's story “The Roommate” was published in the inaugural issue of the new Irish magazine The Four Faced Liar. Alexandra Grabbe’s story “Out Of This World,” a reprint, was published in Fiction on the Web. A dozen years ago, Chip Cheek encouraged her to submit. Reprints do get published! Boston Writers of Color Member and Instructor Xujun Eberlein's personal essay "Ms. Daylily," winner of the 2021 Iowa Review Award in nonfiction judged by Melissa Febos, was published in The Iowa Review. She thanks her writing group, "Nonfiction Narwhals," for their continued support and ever-helpful feedback.

Iris (Yi Youn) Kim's essay "I Got Korean Double Eyelid Surgery at Age 18. I Look Back Now with Regret" was published in Harper's Bazaar. She thanks her Advanced Essay Workshop instructor Shuchi Saraswat and her classmates for helping shape the essay. Boston Writers of Color Member and Essay Incubator student Thuy Phan's essay "Backstreet’s back this holiday season — thanks to their music, I am too" was published in WBUR’s Cognoscenti. She thanks instructor Ethan Gilsdorf and her classmates from the Essay Incubator for their feedback and encouragement. Steve Singer's op-ed "Let's Talk About Repealing the Second Amendment" was published in The CT Mirror. He thanks instructor Ethan Gilsdorf and his "6 Weeks, 3 Op-Eds" classmates for their guidance and support.

Essay Incubator Graduate Kendra Stanton Lee’s essay “I’ve sent a holiday card every year for the past 17 years. It’s time to stop” was published on Today.com. She is ever-grateful for the editing tips she learned from Ethan Gilsdorf. Instructor Lesléa Newman's bilingual children's book, Alicia and the Hurricane: A Story of Puerto Rico/Alicia y el huracán: Un cuento de Puerto Rico, has been named a Best Book of 2022 by the Center for the Study of Multicultural Children's Literature. Boston Writers of Color member and Memoir Incubator Graduate Sara Orozco’s Tiny Love Story, “When I First Knew,” was published by the New York Times.

Memoir Incubator Graduate Tamara MC’s piece “I’ve Worn This $8 Bra for 27 Years” was published in The Strategist’s column “This Things Incredible.” She thanks Andrea Meyer and Vanessa Martir for their support. Her piece “My Lithuanian Holocaust Survivor Grandmother” was published on 100 Word Story. Pete Prokesch's short story "Fading Away," was published in The Westchester Review. He thanks instructor Adam Stumacher and his classmates from “Advanced Submission and Revision Strategies” for workshopping the piece and instructors Jane Dykema and Elena Britos for their feedback. Instructor and Boston Writers of Color member Kayla Degala-Paraíso's flash creative nonfiction piece "BANG!" was published in Bending Genres.

Editorial consultant and instructor Caitlin McGill was awarded a fellowship by the Ragdale Foundation. Erin Kannan’s work in progress, a book of creative nonfiction about refugee resettlement, has been shortlisted for the inaugural Sutherland House Nonfiction Prize. It's one of five in the shortlist, and voting ends on December 22nd. Instructor Tina Tocco's blog post "5 Tips for Breaking into Children’s Magazine Writing" was published by the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (Westchester County, New York Chapter).

Federico Erebia was selected for the Poets & Writers inaugural publicity incubator. It’s a terrific opportunity to promote Pedro & Daniel before the June 6, 2023 launch from Levine Querido. Porsha Olayiwola, the poet laureate of Boston, is opening a new bookstore in Dorchester called “The Book Shop.” Jo Malicdem published their fourth issue of Lunchbox Magazine (The Trailblazer Issue), their last as Co-Director of the publication as they graduate from Emerson College this December.
