Class Description

How often do we shrink and bend our stories to the comfort of others, at the expense of our peace and our voice? This poetry course will use part-documentary, part-lyric procedural to connect to identity and personal stories. The format will challenge writers to dig within themselves to explore why their work deserves to be heard.

Inspired by Claudia Rankine’s Citizen, in which she asks herself, “How can I love you today?” this workshop will explore strategies and questions that will strengthen your writing techniques for published and personal work. We will read, play, and do some in-class writing exercises to explore our boundaries, formulate questions, and expand our comfort level in ways that can help strengthen our poetry. This course is ideal for writers who have an interest in reading and writing poetry, who are not afraid to experiment with structure, and who want to develop a daily writing practice.

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
