Class Description
Point of view is, in the words of Henry James, the “central intelligence” of story. In this seminar, we will explore this crucial and fascinating element of craft. Through in-class exercises, discussion, and a diverse array of readings from authors such as Junot Diaz, Edward P. Jones, Zadie Smith, and Virginia Woolf, we will examine the wide range of point of view choices, from the conventional to the experimental. You will leave this class not only having gained an appreciation for the ways authors use point of view to engage and astonish readers, but also with a new toolbox of strategies to breathe life into the story you want to tell.
