Find Your Voice in Fiction

Class Description

Looking to make your fiction stand out? Finding a distinctive voice is one of the most important steps you can take. Whether you’re writing short stories, novella, a novel, or plotting a full series, a strong voice establishes authority and style and helps pull a reader into the world of your characters. In this class, we’ll discuss strategies for developing and implementing an engaging voice to carry a compelling story. We’ll cover the importance of point-of-view and its relationship to voice in fiction. Short in-class readings of work from Victor LaValle, Mia Alvar, Julian Jarboe, and Sarah Hall will be paired with a series of writing exercises, through which we’ll explore different types of voices and exciting ways to access these voices in our work. Ideal for writers with works-in-progress as well as those looking to generate seeds for future stories.

Class Format

This class will take place in-person at our Center for Creative Writing in Boston's Seaport neighborhood.

Scholarship Information

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
