Class Description

With interest in transgender narratives on the rise, more cisgender writers are adding trans characters to their stories...but often with harmful or offensive results despite the best of intentions. What can you do to make sure you’re providing appropriate representation? In this rigorous session, we will explore just about everything you could imagine to help ensure you have a firm foundation to write a trans character or story, including the Three E’s of wanting to write a trans character, the best craft approaches for each, and their potential pitfalls. We’ll also go over (in)appropriate reasons to write a trans narrative, general do’s and don’ts of writing trans characters, and an overview of trans experiences most often used incorrectly in stories. There will even be opportunity for Q&A about all the trans things you've always wanted to ask, but were too afraid to. Don't be shy! This session is designed to encourage cis writers to do their best and help them better connect with themselves and the transgender world around them.

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class.
