Class Description

What will it mean to be human in immediate and deep time futures? As many feel we are in the final seasons of earth, futurist writers of color have crafted future myth as a way to create unlimited access into the future. Can we learn to write into myth as a way of envisioning our future culture and social identities as post-apocalyptic, counter-dystopian narratives? From Solarpunk, Mythpunk, to other diverse futurisms, let’s look at genres that can act as imaginative entry points into your futurist writing. We’ll read authors of eco-speculation that include Vandana Singh, Cherie Dimaline, Octavia Butler, Nisi Shawl, & Joshua Whitehead.

This class opens up a space for BIPOC writers to write in a community that energizes the writing process, steering clear of traditional workshop pitfalls that can be inhibiting and often silencing. Writers will have the opportunity to engage in generative writing prompts as a perk to have some new, written work to walk away with. BIPOC Writers of all genres welcome!
