Class Description

Writing for the Stage and Screen is a workshop for aspiring theater playwrights and screenwriters of film and television. This multi-medium class will be a mix of craft based explorations, scene studies of plays, curated viewings of screenwork, generative writing sessions, and "on our feet" workshops where you will get to hear your words read aloud by your peers. Projects will include monologues, short scenes, and perhaps a solid start on a long form script. Writers will get to write in their medium(s) of choice. You should expect to leave with a stronger hand at character development, world building, structure, dialogue, visual directions, and how to effectively write across the three artistic mediums for the stage and screen. Together, we will: participate in a supportive creative community, actively engage in the dramatic mediums for the stage and screen, explore, discover, experiment, learn from mistakes and try again, draw from a living archive of diverse writers with diverse stories in both form and content, learn how to read and discuss works with curiosity as excavators, learn how to give and receive feedback that empowers the writer, nourish a brave workshop setting for both writers and responders, grow in confidence as storytellers, tune into our voices, point of view, and values as artists, hone our original perspectives and have fun!

Students will leave this class with a collection of monologues, scenes, and a greater understanding of dialogue, character, and structure. For writers of all experience levels, age 13 - 18 ONLY.

Sustainability:

Based on student suggestions to offer writers a more sustainable learning experience, this YAWP weeklong provides a balance of craft sessions and exercises with plenty of optional components so that teens can take screen breaks as needed.

Each morning session will feature a craft talk or group exercise with your designated instructor, and in the afternoon you’ll have optional and lowkey meetings that could consist of:

  • Q&A chat with your writing instructor
  • Group writing with music
  • Reading party
  • Movie viewing followed by a chat about craft
  • Writing games
  • Open mic/sharing

Students are encouraged to self-advocate, opting out if they are fatigued and diving in if they want more creative activity. Either way, instructors will always be available to answer questions via email and/or Zoom chat!
